The main objective of higher education is to make students take part in the learning process (Siles-Gonzalez & Solano-Ruiz, 2016). Towards this, educational institutions and educators design various interventions to stimulate students to participate in the learning process (Smith, 2011). One such intervention conducted in my class was a group work involving remake of a Korean video. The underlying essay will critically reflect on my part – as to how it went and my learnings from the group work.
Editing of a music video was a novel experience for me. I was already familiar with NU’EST as I has been following them after they appeared on Produce 101 and won the first place. To remake we chose their music video Dejavu from the album WHO, YOU. This video is slightly sad with Jonghyun’s rap featuring prominently. The lyrics are very meaningful and as I had to listen to them again and again while editing it made me feel sad and confused as it gives mixed vibes. Editing this video for a remake was difficult for me as I had no prior experience and in the video the artists were shot separately and then interspersed together. I mostly used open source video editing programs, as commercial products were very expensive. While in the original the vocals, images and lyrics go perfectly well together, I learnt that it is not easy to put together a music video. Finally, when I arranged the video shots to suit our remake requirements, we felt that it was in no way as good as the original. However, we had lot of fun working on this remake video.
In conclusion, I can say that the group work provided us an opportunity to make a cover on our own and this reflection has helped to critically review my learnings. This group work showed that, learning happens only when there is transformation and transformation is possible only when we critically reflect on our learnings.
